Landfill Operations

Frederick Community College believes in Sustainability.  We believe in the ideal that we should all be involved in doing our part by participating in recycling programs and utilizing materials and services that make the best use of our resources.

The College has adopted recycling programs that provide collection bins around our campus for ease of use in being good stewards. The collection bins allow drop off of cardboard, general paper, plastic bottles and aluminum cans. These materials are then collected and picked up by a local recycling firm on a regular basis. But our involvement does not stop there.

During the past year Frederick Community College has recycled 500 fluorescent lamps, 250 gallons of  used motor oil, 108 wooden pallets, 3,720 lbs. of scrap iron, 42 lbs. scrap copper, 48 rubber tires, 166 batteries and 9,926 lbs. of sensitive paper documents.

Throughout the summer and fall Plant personnel gather and recycle 100% of all brush, shrub, tree and grass trimmings.

During interior renovation and refurbishment our Plant staff are tuned into purchasing and using sustainable materials. All paints purchased meet or exceed the low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) guidelines. VOC’s are the evaporative elements in paint that are released into the atmosphere.

Frederick County curbside service accepts all sorts of paper (office, newspaper, magazines, etc.), corrugated cardboard, aluminum cans, steel cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles and jars of all colors. Satellite recycling drop-off centers accept used motor oil & antifreeze, lead-acid batteries, scrap metal, metal appliances, flexible foam (such as old cushions, not styrofoam). The electronics drop-off site accepts cell phones, TV's, old laptop computers, monitors, printer, scanners, etc. Yard waste is no longer allowed in the landfill. Options for yard waste include: "Grasscycle," backyard composting, and drop-off at one of the two County trimming and mulch sites.
